For parents/guardians of prospective participants,

we have collected questions or concerns that you may have before applying to CAMPLIFIRE: ISA.

Trees from the Jisso Campground in Isa, Kagoshima

1. What organization is coordinating Camplifire?

CAMPLIFIRE is organized by Humony International, Inc. (https://humonyinter.com/).

After living abroad for 15 years in the USA and six years in France, the representative director, Mr Hyoe Narita, became acutely aware of the need for true internationalization and established Humony International, Inc.

Camplifire is a challenge to nurture the children who will lead the next generation. Camplifire is led by one of Japan's leading outdoor coordinator, Masakazu Hasebe.

2. Can my child participate even if they're am not confident in their English/Japanese?

Camplifire believes, like all summer camps in the US with a diverse group of children, that it is natural for some children to be confident in their language abilities, and others not to be.

Even children who are not confident in their English or Japanese will find ways to communicate as they are engaged in the activities.
Children who have only had contact with English/Japanese in a school environment are welcome, as CAMPLIFIRE staff will adapt to the individual levels of each participant to ensure that everyone can enjoy themselves.

For children who are less confident in their speaking skills, while we will encourage use of their weaker language, we will accommodate to their levels and support understanding by using English/Japanese when needed. Our staff includes native English and Japanese speakers, and are always happy to help.

CAMPLIFIRE faces activities that are considered ‘dangerous’, such as using knives and handling fire, with safety as a top priority, under the supervision of the Camp Captain and professional coaches.

We at CAMPLIFIRE believe that learning how to properly tackle such activities with a hands-on approach is important for human development and to nurture a zest for life.

4. What kind of facility will participants be staying in?

At CAMPLIFIRE: ISA, participants are divided into groups and stay in cottages in the Jisso Seishonen Ryokomura. The cottages are fully equipped with flushable toilets, bath and shower, sinks, and air conditioning, so participants can fully rest after a long day full of fun activities.

5. What kind of meals are provided during the camp?

Meals are primarily catered with the support of a local organization.

Additionally, participants can enjoy a barbecue, pizzas made by the participants themselves in our wood-burning pizza oven, and Nagashi Somen - where they will split their own bamboo to create a slide for noodles to flow down.

As such, participants can enjoy a mix of attempting to decide and make their own camp spreads, as well as catered meals throughout their time at CAMPLIFIRE: ISA.

6. Will accommodations for allergies be possible?

Depending on the severity and type of allergies, accommodations can be made.

Please contact us separately before applying if your participant requires special meals.

8. How are the participants' health management overseen?

At CAMPLIFIRE, we require morning and evening checks of temperature and individual conversations with participants about overall physical conditions. The Camp Captain and Team Leaders make sure to constantly keep a close eye on participants and are available to help at any time if they are feeling poorly or need help.

Additionally, we are aware and understand that participants may be more sensitive than usual when trying to get used to an unfamiliar environment. The Camp Captain and Team Leaders are there to provide emotional support for participants who are feeling uneasy.

For more information on how CAMPLIFIRE: ISA prepares for accidents or emergencies, please refer to "Safety Measures" under "Information for Parents and Guardians".

8. I am worried about my child taking a plane alone...

CAMPLIFIRE meets and disbands at Kagoshima International Airport.

Parents and Guardians who would like support during the transportation period, please refer to each airline's services for unaccompanied minors (a good place to start would be JAL's Smile Support or ANA's Junior Pilot Service).

Additionally, please book flight tickets and any additional support services as soon as possible after applying for CAMPLIFIRE: ISA, as the summer time is high season for flying.

9. Are participants allowed to use phones and other entertainment devices during the camp?

In order to digitally detox and concentrate on the camp activities, the use of cell phones or entertainment devices (such as gaming devices) is prohibited during the camp period (staff will collect any devices on the first day of camp).

If you need to contact your child urgently, please contact the CAMPLIFIRE Administration.
